Dont be the best kept secret in your organization

Dont be the best kept secret in your organizationDont be the best kept secret in your organizationI feel like Im the best-kept secret in this organization, said Tina. She had been the last person hired by an energy companys corporate treasury kollektiv before an 18-month hiring freeze. Not long after Tina joined the firm, commodity prices fell. Industry forecasters warned of hard times ahead. Tinas department placed an indefinite hold on all hiring and promotions.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreTina welches a hard worker and a whipsmart financial analyst with three years of experience, so she welches by no means an entry-level employee. However, as the youngest on her team, thats how she was perceived for the for the foreseeable future. She struggled to escape the perception that she was the junior on the team.Tinas role involved daily tracking and reporting on corporate investme nt accounts. The work was fairly routine and came easily to her, and she could complete it quickly. Eager to help her group and demonstrate that she was team player, Tina offered to use her free time to assist some senior managers with any help they needed. Her intention was to show that she was a valuable contributor, but it backfired. The senior managers quickly figured out that they could take all of the small, low-priority tasks that they could not be bothered dealing with and dump them on Tina, who soon became buried under a mountain of busy work. While she was reformatting PowerPoint slides, making lunch reservations, and negotiating better parking spaces, no one saw her dedication and work ethic, let alone the sophisticated analytical and problem-solving skills she brought to the team.I met Tina at a womens leadership workshop that her company hosted. She approached me during the lunch break to ask for advice about her predicament. She explained that it filled her with anxiety to imagine being stuck for another 18 months in a role that underutilized her talents and offered no growth. I feel like Im the invisible employee, she remarked, with a sad smile. So I offered to share a quick overview ofthe steps she could take to rebrand herselffrom entry-level junior employee to a role that that had greater currency on the team. But first, we needed to get a baseline of her starting point. What brand are you currently known for?I asked. Her eyes widened. Im the pooper-scooper she exclaimed. Im the only one on the team who is willing to roll up her sleeves and clean up the little messes that the senior managers dont want to deal with.Thats not much of a leadership brand, I commented, and we both laughed. We spent the rest of our lunch hour discussing the higher level capabilities she had to offer, and how she could move beyond her current responsibilities. Tina brainstormed some of the ways she could see herself making a larger impact that might be of real value to her company.Soon, Tina was bursting with enthusiasm for what was possible. She described how she wanted to work with her colleagues to identify critical financial issues and use her analytical skills to measure and articulate those problems. She wanted to propose solutions, and make sure those solutions were implemented. Not only that, she added, I want to make sure the changes stick.Do you see yourself as a change agent? I asked. Tinas eyes lit up in a way that let me know we were onto something significant. Yes. Thats it I want to be seen as a change agent, she replied. And just like that, she defined her new personal brand. Starting the next day, she began to think and act more like a change agent than a newbie. She diplomatically informed her colleagues that she was no longer accepting low-level pooper-scooper tasks, and suddenly, found she had time to spare.Tina let her manager know she had time to take on some stretch assignments. Together, they identified some critical busines s issues that were worthy of attention from an analytical problem-solver and change agent. With her managers guidance, Tina was so successful with her first two projects that she became known asthechange agenton her team. She was promoted to manager within a year, and now helps other junior team members to identify their strengths, deliver valuable results, level-up how others perceive them, and, in time, and propel themselves forward into a new career phase.Lets face it It isnt especially easy to break out and establish yourself as an up-and-coming leader inside a large corporation.Perhaps you have developed a great reputation as a valuable contributor with a solid work ethic, but wonder why its not translating into career advancement. Maybe you saw a coveted role get snapped up by a colleague- a job you know you could crush, if given the chance. And some days you feel, as Tina put it, like the invisible employee. In short, you feel like the best-kept secret in your organization. If thats you, I want to be clear It doesnt have to stay that way. Youve bumped up against a barrier that many future leaders, especially women, will face at some point in their careers. Others have navigated beyond this barrier, andin these two videos, I share the steps you can take to move beyond that barrier. This article first appeared on Be Leaderly.

How to Succeed When Starting A New Job

How to Succeed When Starting A New JobHow to Succeed When Starting A New JobMy first job out of college was as a marketing assistant for a publishing company in downtown San Francisco. I was thrilled to work in the center of a lively city and even happier that I was able to turn my love of books into a real career. Looking back now, I can offer a few pointers on how to navigate the first few weeks of a job to make the following months easy sailing.Take the first week to get organized When I first started my colleague in the cubicle next to me offered some helpful adviceDont worry about being busy your first few days. Just get settled in. Many companies have an onboarding process that eases you into your workload. Spend the first few days organizing your workspace and taking care of the basics. Make sure you know how to check your voicemail, how to use the printer and familiarize yourself on where all the office supplies are kept. You also want to use the first few weeks learning and mastering any new systems youll have to use on a regular basis. This time getting to know the office now will help in the future when youre busy meeting a tight deadline.Get to know your colleagues and their communication stylesAs a marketing assistant I worked with a lot of different teams within the company including Creative, Events and Sales. What I learned from behauptung interactions is that everyone has different communication styles, and its a great skill to learn how to adapt to their style. Figure out if they prefer talking face-to-face versus email or vice-versa, and if you feel comfortable, ask them. Some of your colleagues might need a follow-up email after talking on the phone. Learning how to best communicate with your colleagues will make working together easier and, ultimately, produce the best results on projects. Finish your to-do-list before asking for more workGo above and beyond is drilled into our brains on how to get ahead in our careers. When I started at my first job, I wanted to take on everything. What I learned was to make your projects excellent before asking for anything new. Learn as much as you can and master your daily tasks, and your team will see the effort youre putting in. When you start to feel comfortable with your initial responsibilities, that is the right time to ask for more.

Is Your Job the Best Job in America

Is Your Job the Best Job in America Is Your Job the Best Job in America Sure, you have a great job. Your boss is cool. You have a good salary and benefits package. Nobody complains when you take vacation. But is it the best of all possible jobs? If youre wondering how your job stacks up against the best jobs across the country, youll want to take a look at this years50 Best Jobs in Americalist from job site Glassdoor. This report highlights jobs that stand out across three key factors earning potential, hiring demand, and job satisfaction, explains Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at Glassdoor.Of particular note, Glassdoors research shows that higher pay is linked to job satisfaction, but in a smaller way than you might expect.Money can buy happiness, but other workplace factors actually have a larger impact on your overall satisfaction - including culture and values, career opportunities, and the quality of senior leadership, Chamberlain says. Many of the jobs on Glassdoors list are in high-growth sectors, such as tech, healthcare, and finance. Competition for talent is fierce in these areas, so its no surprise to binnensee workers report high satisfaction. Companies are bending over backward to attract and retain skilled talent.Plus, we are currently experiencing a strong labor market with almost 6 million open jobs, hence corporate recruiters are in especially high demand, as companies need help finding the right people for all of the other in-demand jobs, Chamberlain says. And these employees report strong job satisfaction because they are uniquely positioned to help others find their own dream jobs.Tech jobs are also in high demand across industries, in part because every company is trying to become a tech company these days, Chamberlain says. They all need people who know how to collect, organize, and analyze data to help them make better, more informed geschftlicher umgang decisions, Chamberlain continues. Not only do we see a rise in demand for people with the skills to apply statistics and machine learning to gather actionable insights based on data for businesses, but we also see jobs directly involved in business decision-making - such as business analysts, strategy managers, and business development managers - are highly sought after. What Makes a Good Job a Best Job?Data scientist tops the Glassdoor list for the third consecutive year, suggesting theres something special about this role that makes it stand above other jobs. Chamberlain chalks it up to high demand (4,524 open jobs), high salaries ($110,000 median base salary), and high rates of job satisfaction.Data scientists and many of their fellow top 50 roles share a number of things in common, but one of the primary qualities they share is availability across verticals and industries.A key trend we see for these Best Jobs is that many of these roles are also ones that can be found in almost every industry - from data scientists to HR managers and executive assistant s, Chamberlain says. This is encouraging for people with these skills, as there is a wide range of career opportunities to consider. Plus, with the growing impact of automation across industries, demand will continue to grow for workers with the ability to leverage technology to enhance what they do on a daily basis. The Doctor Is in (and So Are zu sich Coworkers)Thats not to say every job on the list crosses industry borders the way many tech jobs do. The healthcare industry also boasts prominent placement on Glassdoors list. Occupational therapist ranks No. 4, followed by physician assistant (No. 25), nursing manager (No. 28), speech language pathologist (No. 35), and nurse practitioner (No. 49).An interesting debut to our Best Jobs list is speech language pathologist, which is related to the broader boom in healthcare jobs, says Chamberlain. This role is focused on helping people, oftentimes children, improve their lives and well-being, without the downsides associated with emerg ency room work or nursing. It is no surprise that many of these employees are satisfied at work. Plus, people with these strong and creative communication skills will be able to use technology to enhance their work and are in no danger of being replaced by automation this year, if ever.- It can be difficult to find passion in your work. You may be trudging along from paycheck to paycheck, thinking theres nothing better out there. For readers looking to guarantee growth, satisfaction, and opportunity, the 50 jobs on Glassdoors list will be a good place to start.

Rude Resignation Letters and Why Not to Write One

Rude Resignation Letters and Why Not to Write OneRude Resignation Letters and Why Not to Write OneEspecially rude and meanresignation lettersand videos abound ansprechbar. Remember Joey Quits with five million views on YouTube? It went viral, and 38,000 people gave Joey DeFrancesco a thumbs up for quitting his job at the Renaissance Hotel by handing manager aresignation letterwhile a marching band celebrated the occasion. An over the top rude resignation letter may landseem like a fun and fitting way to end a job, but ultimately, burning bridges isnt always a good idea. Infamous Rude Resignation Letters In a published letter in The New York Times titled Why Im Leaving Goldman Sachs, Greg Smith dissed the companys corporate culture as toxic and destructive and described how colleagues called their clients muppets.Andrew Lahdes letter was printed in the Financial Times stating that what he learned about the hedge fund business was that he hated it. He admitted he was in it for the money and took advantage of the low hanging fruit by finding people stupid enough to take the other side of my trades. Steven Slater quit Jet Blue after 20 years as a flight attendant. When a flyer refused his edict to sit down by swearing at him, Slater made an unforgettable exit by announcing over the intercom that he was done (in addition to a few expletives). He then tore off his tie, grabbed a beer, released the emergency exit chute and slid down. (Incidentally, he received a year probation for criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.)DJ Dave Lee Travis told BBC listeners on air that he would be leaving the station because changes were being made that went against his principles and he could not abide by them. Perils of a Rude Resignation Letter Keep in mind that everything you publish or put online can come back to bite you later and it may affect your future prospects. After all, what boss wants to hire someone who could potentially make a laughingstock out of him on line for all eternity? In 2010, ten percent of workers complained about their boss online how many of them are still employed? Sure, you have freedom of speech to express yourself, but companies also have a SLAPP lawsuit up their sleeve. SLAPP stands for strategic lawsuit against public participation and its meant to shut up the companys critics. While a SLAPP lawsuit stands little chance in court, its meant to intimidate you and provoke an expensive legal battle. In the long run, your rude resignation is probably not worth the personal, professional and potential financial cost. A Rude Resignation Letter Not all rude letters are YouTube worthy even a simple rude letter can result in problems later on. Heres an example of arude resignation letter- one that you should probably not send. Dear Mr. Walker, I am writing to inform you of my resignation effective immediately. The three months I have spent working for you have been a colossal waste of my time, and I see no reason to c ontinue. Your business is the most poorly run software company I have ever seen, and it is absolutely amazing that it continues to hang on. Please send my final paycheck to my home address. Cheers, Suzette Blanchard The Better Way to Resign In addition to what you shouldnt do, there are some things you shouId do when youre resigning from a job. If you decide its time to leave a job you dont like, dont express your anger in a resignation letter. Take a deep breath, and dont write anything yet. Actually, a good first step to leaving a job you dont like is to clean up your computer to remove any personal files and images that arent related to your job. Then you can give your boss your verbaltwo weeks notice. When youve calmed down, you can write a formal resignation letter thats polite and professional. You may wish to offer assistance during the transition time, especially if youve held your current position for a long time. Finally, even if youre upset with your boss, you may wan t to send a goodbye message to your colleagues. There are a couple of reasons to do this. For one, your colleagues may like you and want to keep in contact. Also, unless you have a new job lined up already, you may need to expand your network, and you never know who can help you get in touch with the right people at another company.

How Economic Growth Could Impact Staffing in 2013

How Economic Growth Could Impact Staffing in 2013How Economic Growth Could Impact Staffing in 2013How Economic Growth Could Impact Staffing in 2013 RossheimRecent signs of economic growth show promise the Dow Jones Industrial Average has powered through 14,000 to reach new all-time highs. Unemployment has dropped about 2.5 percentage points since its peak during the 2009-2009 recession. In most economic cycles, such trends would be signs of an employment recovery in full swing. But in 2013, these economic indicators, though unmistakably positive, are sending a mora nuanced message to American employers and workersAlthough hiring is no longer a basket case, its bedrngnis entirely out of the woods.Companies are saying, I dont want to go all in, Im going to be cautiously optimistic, says Dave Sanford, executive vice president of client relations with recruitment firm WinterWyman in Waltham, Mass.Contingent Staffing Looks BrighterThe view from the contingent staffing industry is a bit su nnier. The majority of employers say they will increase or at least maintain their level of hiring in 2013, says Joel Capperella, senior vice president of customer solutions at Yoh in Philadelphia.Fur out of five large employers say they will hire as many or more new workers in 2013 as they did in 2012, according to a study commissioned by Yoh.Still, there are a number of economic inhibitors in place, among themPolitical gridlock over the Federal budgetTax increases that will cut into consumer spendingHealthcare reform requirementsThe Affordable Care Act, slated to be implemented by Jan. 1, 2014, requires most companies with 50 or more employees to offer employees affordable insurance. Some of the Recessions Effects on Staffing Are WaningBut all told, many of the recessions immediate negative effects on hiring are finally tapering off.The huge productivity gains we were seeing a year or two ago have pretty much evaporated, says Bernard Weinstein, an economist at Southern Methodist Un iversitys Cox School of Business in Dallas. If we cant squeeze much more productivity out of current workers, then we have to hire more workers.Productivity rose by about 5 percent in 2009, at the height of the credit crisis. Increases were much more modest in 2010 and 2011, however, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the last quarter of 2012, productivity actually decreased at a 2 percent annualized rate. The economy was depressed for a long time, so the potential is there for hiring, says Farrokh Hormozi, an economist and chair of the Public Administration Department at Pace University in New York City.Construction Should See a Rebuilding YearConstruction and allied businesses, devastated by the collapse of the housing market, will likely begin to substantially rebuild their workforces in 2013.Whether the real estate market goes up or down, theres a lot of opportunity in our business, says Robert Pelletier, vice president of engineering at RSI Home Products, an Anaheim , Calif.-based firm that designs and manufactures cabinets. During the recession there was a lot of remodeling as people decided to stay put. There is much talk across the economy about the power of IT and automation to boost manufacturing productivity and reduce headcount requirements. Yet meeting increased product demand with more workers is still preferred in many sectors. With nontechnical products like ours, if youre really good at lean manufacturing, its more effective to use human capital than to invest heavily in equipment and automation, says Pelletier.Energy Hiring Powers OnGiven the globalized markets for energy, the United States vast natural resources are likely to continue to generate substantial numbers of new jobs in 2013, leveraged by emerging technologies. From sustainable energy to natural gas, the energy industries will be hiring everyone from engineers to linemen.IT Continues to OutperformAs a key modality of productivity improvement, IT staffing is booming and rec ruitment in the sector should be very competitive this year, especially in hot technologies.Tech is strong in digital and mobile these drive everything, says Sanford. In addition, according to Capperella, cybersecurity demand hasnt ebbed, and enterprise IT methodologies such as agile development are strong.Healthcare and Biotech Show PotentialThe growth of healthcare staffing will undoubtedly be influenced by curbs on reimbursements in the Affordable Care Act.Yet many other aspects of healthcare reform such as the expansion of Medicaid will tend to require more clinicians, healthcare IT specialists, and so on. Codicil FAQ - United States

Codicil FAQ - United States Codicil FAQ - United States CodicilWhat is a codicil?A codicil is an amendment to your Will. A codicil is used when you are happy with the contents of your Will but want to make minor changes. It leaves your original Will intact but makes specific changes, such as adding or deleting a executor. A codicil is signed and witnessed (executed) in the same manner as a Will. What is a Will?A Will is a legal document stating how your money and property will be distributed after you die. Most, but not all, of your property can be disposed of in a Will. The proceeds of a life insurance policy naming someone as a beneficiary or property owned jointly with someone else cannot be disposed of by a Will. A Will also allows you to state a preference for the guardian of your minor children. When could I use a Codicil?A Codicil can be helpful for making a few simple, unambiguous changes to your Last Will. However, it remains critical that your intentions will be clearly understood. It is easy to imagine that writing one codicil after another for your Last Will can be a puzzle for a judge to sort through after you are dead. When your changes are many, overlapping or complicated then it is easy for you to have overlooked some detail or contradiction. If you think that your intentions could be misunderstood by a judge then don't take the chance. Write a new Last Will. You might use a Codicil for the following circumstance: If you want to change your executor; or If you want to change a guardian. When should I write a new Last Will?A Codicil is not always a good choice when you need to make changes to your Will. If complex changes need to be made then your intentions may be clearer if you start over and write a new Will. It is especially important to write a new Will for the following events: You get married (a change in marital status may void your Will); You are unmarried, but have a new partner; You want to add or remove a beneficiary; The amount of money and property you own significantly changes; Parties Named in the CodicilWhat is a testator?A testator is the person who is making the will. A female testator is often referred to as a testatrix. What is a beneficiary?A beneficiary is a party who is receiving a gift from the testator. Beneficiaries can be people or organizations. What is a Legatee?A Legatee is someone who receives a gift or benefit or legacy in a Last Will. Any individual, firm, trust, partnership, unincorporated association, corporation, or a governmental body may be a legatee. What is an executor? An executor is the person who will be carrying out the terms of your (the testators) Will and administering your estate. An executor is sometimes referred to as a personal representative. The ExecutorWhat does an executor do?An executor or personal representative is responsible for collecting the assets of the estate, paying any debts of the estate, paying state and federal taxes, and distributing the assets of the estate in accordance with the directions of the Will. Whom should I select to be my executor?Administering the estate can be complex, time-consuming and stressful. Ensure you select someone you trust, who will be able to handle your financial matters prudently. Your executor does not need to have any legal expertise. An executor can always hire a lawyer should the need arise. Many people select their spouse or an adult child to be their executor. Also, people often choose an individual who will be receiving a substantial amount of property to be their executor. In this way, the executor will want to ensure that the property is distributed properly. Can I choose anybody to act as my executor?Usually you can choose anyone to act as executor except a minor or a convicted felon. Additionally, some jurisdictions place restrictions on non-resident executors (for example, some states specify that all non-resident executors must be related to you). Can my executor be a beneficiary in my Will?Yes, your executor can be a beneficiary in your Will. WitnessesWhat is an Interested Witness? An interested witness is a witness that will receive a gift or devise under the Codicil or Will. No attesting witness is interested unless the witness is devised or bequeathed some portion of the testator's estate. Can one or more of my witnesses be a beneficiary in my Will? No. In almost all cases a probate judge will invalidate any gift given to a witness unless there are the required minimum number of additional uninterested witnesses who are not beneficiaries. Where a gift has been given to a witness, it will not automatically invalidate the Will, however the gift will probably be reduced to what the witness would have received if the testator had died intestate or to what the beneficiary would have received under the Will, whichever is LESS. A witness should also not be the spouse of someone receiving a gift under the Will. IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE. Always select witnesses that will NOT receive a gift under your Will. Where a beneficiary is receiving a gift under the Last Will but is not named directly in the Codicil can this beneficiary act as witness to the Codicil? That depends. For example, if the Codicil is making a change to the Will that ultimately affects the residue of the estate and the witness is sharing in the residue then the Codicil is affecting a gift to the witness. The gift to the witness may be void. AGAIN IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE. Always select witnesses that will NOT receive a gift under your Will or any of its Codicils. SigningWhat does execution of the Last Will or Codicil mean?Execution of the Last Will or Codicil is the act of signing and witnessing the document by the testator and the witnesses. Depending on the jurisdiction, valid execution may require the following: a) that the Last Will and Codicils must be in writing, b) that it contains a statement at the end attesting that it is your Last Will, c) the date and place of signing, d) that you signed it in the presence of witnesses, e) that the witnesses then also signed it in your presence, and f) in many jurisdictions that the witnesses signed in the presence of each other. What is the Affidavit for?The notarized affidavit is used to make a Last Will or Codicil self-attesting. A Last Will or Codicil can be made self-attesting or self-proving by having each witness swear an oath and sign an affidavit in front of a notary. This removes the requirement of having one of your witnesses go to court to verify that the Last Will or Codicil was properly executed. What is a Self-Attesting Affidavit?Normally a witness will be required to testify in probate court that the Last Will or Codicil was executed properly. Alternatively, this requirement may be satisfied by having each witness swear an oath and sign an affidavit in front of a notary. This removes the requirement of having one of your witnesses go to court to verify proper execution. What is the difference between an Attestation and a Affidavit?Attestation and Affidavit are two different things. A notarized affidavit is used to make a Last Will or Codicil self-attesting. Attestation is simply the act of witnessing a document at the request of the person who made the document. Do I need to notarize my Last Will for it to be legal? No. The purpose of notarizing your Last Will or Codicil is to make it self-attesting. A Last Will or Codicil does not have to be self-attesting to be legally valid. In the affidavit, what is meant by Official Capacity of Officer? The officer in this case would be a Notary Public. A Notary Public is a state-appointed official who is authorized to authenticate the signing of legal documents by verifying the identity of the persons that sign the document. Governing LawWhat law will govern my Last Will or Codicil? The governing law for your Codicil will be the law of the jurisdiction where you live at the time of your death. However, the probate court will want to verify that your Codicil was executed (signed) correctly. In most jurisdictions the probate court will want to verify that your Last Will and Codicils were signed in compliance with: a) local laws (where the Last Will is submitted for probate); or b) if its signing complies with the law at the time of execution of the place where the Last Will is signed; or c) if its signing complies with the law of the place where, either at the time of signing or at the time of death, the testator is domiciled. MiscellaneousWhat is probate?Probate is the court-supervised procedure that determines the validity of your Last Will after you die. Probate can also refer to the general process of collecting your assets, paying your debts and distributing the remaining property to your beneficiaries after you die. What is a testamentary Trust?A testamentary trust is a trust created in a Last Will that is effective only on the death of the testator. What does to die intestate mean?To die intestate means that the testator failed to write a Last Will before death or the Last Will was somehow void.

The Military Personnel Flight (MPF) can help the applicant determine what the new DEROS will need to be to be eligible to apply. If the applicant does not, they must request an extension through their normal base channels. If the applicant does not have enough time remaining on their assignment, they will be ineligible to apply for a commissioning program. Special rules apply for members with an Enlistment Bonus or Selective Reenlistment Bonus or for those who need a TOS or DEROS waiver. Applicants with a bachelors degree in another field may apply to participate in AECP to earn a second bachelors degree in one of the above-listed fields. Selection Process The AECP application process consists of two parts...the AFIT evaluation and the AECP Selection Board. The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) evaluates the applicants academic credentials to ensure they meet the minimum academic eligibility criteria for their desired major. The AECP Selection board meets in April each year. The board utilizes the whole person concept to evaluate applicants. As part of the board process, applicants will be evaluated on their ability to put their package together in the proper format in accordance with the ECP Package Checklist and directions on this site. It is the applicants responsibility to ensure that the package is complete. While the board considers all documents in an application package, they typically focus on the commanders recommendation, the airmans duty performance history, and the applicants academic performance to determine the applicants eligibility. Airmen selected the board will begin classes the following fall term. In rare cases, and airman may apply for a waiver to begin classes during the following spring term. Study This is why Snapchat is bad for your career

Study This is why Snapchat is bad for your career Study This is why Snapchat is bad for your career A new study shows that “temporary” social media apps, like Snapchat, could be bad for your career.By now, most of us have heard the horror stories of private social media posts going public. We know all too well how jobs can be lost and careers can be ruined by one ill-worded tweet. Ninety-three percent of us said we are aware that a recruiter can check our social media before hiring us.And yet, most of us don’t opt out of social media altogether. We want to see that baby photo and we want to update our networks about our careers.Ephemeral social media platforms, the kind that Instagram Stories and Snapchat offer, are marketed as the solution between the impulse to share personal information and the desire to stay discreet. After you post your selfies to Snapchat or Instagram Stories, these posts are built to self-destruct and disappear within a short timeframe. But new research in the  Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America finds that th ese platforms carry their own career-ending risks as well: The researchers found that when you think your selfie is temporary, you are inclined to share riskier images that can “come back to haunt” you, because our brains don’t forget what they see - even in a disappearing snapshot image.Lulled into taking more risksIn nine studies with a total of 2,000 participants, researchers found that the promise of temporary sharing more than triples the likelihood that you will share something “uninhibited” online - often to disastrous consequence. The researchers classified participants’ selfies as “uninhibited” behavior when the participants would be willing to use a silly or unusual face, stick out their tongue, or show nudity, drinking, or drug use.Worse, we falsely think we think that the best medium to share a risky selfie is through temporary sharing because it will leave a better impression. Fifty-three percent of sharers in one study said that they would rather shar e a nude photo through a medium like Snapchat because it would leave a better impression than having that risqué photo exist permanently. But researchers found that the “impression made by a temporarily shared uninhibited selfie persists beyond its short life.”The impressions lingerThese bad impressions of your reckless, carefree selfie linger in our minds. Observers rating sharers said that uninhibited temporary selfies came across as having worse judgment, regardless of the selfie coming from a private channel. We’re not sympathetic to how discreet you were trying to be, in other words, if we’re put off by your behavior.Watch what you share“Although social media are increasingly becoming broadcast tools, sharers do not always treat them as such, sometimes acting as if they are sending private letters when really the situation is more akin to sending postcards on which messages are in plain sight,” the researchers conclude.Prospective employers are not going to give yo ur risky postcard complaining about work and bosses the benefit of doubt. The researchers suggested that social media platforms should build “cooling-off” features into their products  that allow users to delay the time between a post being sent and it going live for all to see. But that requires relying on a computer as your sympathetic editor.Until technology platforms are built with second chances, you’ll have to be your own editor and think twice before you post.

What to Do While Waiting to Hear Back After a Job Interview

What to Do While Waiting to Hear Back After a Job Interview What to Do While Waiting to Hear Back After a Job Interview 2 What are the best moves to make after a job interview, especially if the waiting period stretches into days or weeks, and youre on pins and needles?  To be sure, there are certain professional courtesies and protocol for following up on job applications  that you should view as necessities. How do you reinforce a good impression with the hiring manager, and also harness any nervous energy you might be feeling after a job interview? Here are some steps to consider while youre waiting to hear back after a job interview: Follow through. Send a brief, personalized  thank-you note  immediately after the interview (that same day, or the next) indicating your genuine appreciation for the time and effort they invested in the interview. An email may be the best format, but take a cue from the platform you may have used for any written communication with them pre-interview. This may seem obvious, but showing up in person, unannounced, is a really bad move that could spell the death knell for your hiring chances. Strike the right tone. In any post-interview communications, be careful to reinforce the high points of the job interview. Youll want to come off as self-assured (but not cocky) and confident (but not desperate). Study up on how to send a thank-you note if youre rusty, or new to the practice. Show your continuing enthusiasm about the job, and reinforce your connection to them and the organization. Practice patience. It can be tricky to figure out how long to wait if you havent heard back after a job interview. Try to be patient and keep paranoia to a minimum. Take into consideration everything that might be going on with your prospective new boss to  understand  why employers dont respond  right away  in some cases.  Reasons can range from the obvious (you didnt get the job), to something as simple as  the employers schedule (theyve been too busy to get back to you). Keep in mind that Mondays and Fridays are often the busiest days of the business week for managers. Dont pester. How often should you contact the hiring manager after the interview? Take the overall time frame into consideration, and use your best judgment. Its a good idea to ask during the interview about when you should expect to hear from them, and take it from there. Once or perhaps twice in the first week or two is appropriate. If you receive encouraging responses, consider it a green light to keep going in a meaningful way. Keeping them up-to-speed on any new accomplishments is a great way to stay in the game. Dont overanalyze your performance. After the interview, avoid beating yourself up about any perceived missteps, or second-guessing your answers after the fact. Try not to read too much into how things went, especially if weeks have gone by and you havent heard back after a job interview. While youre waiting, try to stay optimistic and view the interview as a learning experience that can help you  prep for job interviews  in the future. Handle rejection gracefully. Worst case: they hired someone else, not you. Its easy to take it personally if you didnt get the job, but dont- its business, after all. Thank them again, solicit any meaningful feedback they might offer, and ask whether you might be a good fit for a future position. Its always good idea to leave the door open for reapplying with a company after a job rejection- and maybe landing a job that works better for you.

3 questions to help eradicate conflict in the workplace

3 questions to help eradicate conflict in the workplace 3 questions to help eradicate conflict in the workplace When I see conflict in the workplace it often relates to turf. Someone feels threatened. Something is at stake. Some compromise needs to be made that leaves people uncomfortable. And people retreat to their respective corners to protect their territory. After all, change means giving up something - right? Not always. Change often means opportunity. But opportunity is hard to see when shielded by the blinding rays of pride. And pride is the rose-colored sunglass of fear. “I’m not afraid. If he/she would just ___________ (do their job, not expect so much, leave things alone, be nicer to me, show respect) this problem would not be happening.”When you are involved in a  conflict and feel the adrenaline rush grip you in a panic just pause. If you practice this, over time, you will be able to increase that “Pause Café space” between when you feel fear and negatively react to it, compromising your executive presence. In the pause moment ask yourself the following questions to dif fuse the situation and desensitize to it.3 questions to ask yourself in the Pause Café moment1. What do I notice is happening inside of me right now? Where do I feel it? Name it. (Allow the threat or fear to flow through you like a river â€" don’t fight it.) Not “I will not be afraid.” But “Oh, this is what it’s like to feel threatened. I see you.”2. What is asking for acceptance?3. How can I meet what is happening inside of me right now with unconditional friendliness â€" like I would advise a friend? (No judgment.) “May I be gentle with myself in this moment?”Stay in the moment and not in the future practicing failure. Embrace what you are running from and be comfortable with the discomfort. Trust yourself not the fear in your head. You have everything you need right inside you.For a free tip sheet on the Pause Café Strategy click here. E-Fest Program Planning and Objectives a QA

E-Fest Program Planning and Objectives a QA E-Fest Program Planning and Objectives a QA E-Fest Program Planning and Objectives: a Q&A   On March 3, 2017, ASME will roll out the first of three E-Fests programs in Jaipur, India.   Two years in planning, E-Fests are a major ASME initiative that incorporate resources and leadership at the volunteer and staff level.   Here, representatives of ASME staff who are playing major roles in program planning and development share ideas regarding the making of E-Fests and what its intended audience â€" students and early career engineers â€" can expect to experience at the events. What are E-Fests? E-Fests are regional events that provide venues for engineering students to showcase their technical skills and abilities through participation in various design competitions.   E-Fests also offer an essential networking component, to connect students to thought leaders and practicing engineers to receive practical and valuable career advice and guidance.   E-Fests are built on an engineering festivals model, incorporating technical programs, ASME competitions and social activities in one place.      Thomas Loughlin, Executive Director, ASME Why E-Fests? ASME has created E-Fests as a vehicle to better prepare post-secondary students and early career engineers to be a part of todays diverse and multidisciplinary engineering community.   E-Fests celebrate engineering and innovation, while also connecting young professionals to opportunities for career enhancement and preparation.       E-Fests are the end product of an organizational assessment of the Societys role in preparing the next generation of engineers for work in the complex world of today.   This assessment was exhaustive, extending over two years and collecting insights from various units of the Society, from the Student and Early Career Development Council to our technical divisions, and culling from multiple studies and reports, like Voice of the Customer and Vision 2030. Our finding was that young engineers, students especially, are seeking enhancements in the skills development space. Noha El-Ghobashy, Executive Director, The ASME Foundation El-Ghobashy: E-Fests ensure that ASME is continually improving its service to its 30,000 student members in 750 universities around the world who are seeking a stronger level of engagement with peer groups, business professionals, and ASME leaders. Smith: E-Fests add a dimension to the Society’s strong portfolio of outreach programs for the student and early career sectors, incorporating elements and components to enhance and enrich the total experience for attendees. What are the components of E-Fests? Smith: E-Fests will include ASME’s premier student design competitions â€" Human Powered Vehicle Competition, IAM3D, Student Design Competition, and Old Guard â€" all centralized in one event. Each E-Fest will stage regional competitions; winning design teams will continue to compete at respective ASME international conferences, such as IMECE. El-Ghobashy: E-Fests will feature career development workshops, networking opportunities, and roundtables in which students and early career engineers interface with leaders in academia and the business community. We will also be organizing hackathons at E-Fests, in which students collaborate on design projects Will the targeted markets be receptive to E-Fests? El-Ghobashy: Projections are for 1,000 attendees at the inaugural E-Fests in Jaipur, with a turnout of around 550 at each of the other events. Brandy Smith, Senior Program Manager, STEM ProgramsSmith: We anticipate enthusiastic support from the host universities at each event.   The host universities will ally with ASME in building awareness of E-Fests and building program content. Loughlin: Our best assets are the attendees themselves.   We expect students to embrace the opportunities at E-Fests, to immerse into a celebration of technology and innovation, spread the excitement, and serve as ambassadors for future programs.   We are building a movement here! What will be the total experience for students and early career engineers? El-Ghobashy: The competitions at E-Fests will provide a platform for students to showcase their skills, talents, and abilities.   And since E-Fests will bring distinct design competitions into one setting, students see creative engineering applications outside of primary areas of interest. Smith: At E-Fests, students and early career engineers will have the opportunity to interact with leading corporations which are employers of engineering talent, engaging with these firms to develop deep relationships and collaborations, as well as understanding the changing landscape for business success. How many E-Fests events are planned? Smith: Three E-Fests are planned for 2017.   In addition to the inaugural event in Jaipur, E-Fests will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., and Cookeville, Tenn. El-Ghobashy: A focus of program planning was to create a modularity in the business model, so that all E-Fests may share the same program components and a common brand.   However, each program will incorporate elements reflecting the local flavor of participating universities and companies. How do E-Fests fit into the organizational strategy of ASME? El-Ghobashy: Robotics and advanced manufacturing are two of the technologies that the ASME Board of Governors has identified as focus areas for the Society in FY17 â€" and these two technologies will be on full display at the Human Powered Vehicle Competition, Student Design Competition, Old Guard Competition, and IAM3D. Loughlin: The Society has a rich tradition of outreach to students and early career engineers. E-Fests ensure that ASME remains invested in the next generation of engineers.   The Societys vision, reflected in this new and exciting undertaking, is for every engineering student and early career engineer to possess the tools, experience, and confidence to solve the complex challenges facing the world.

8 Genius Ways to Hide the Fact That Youre Nervous

8 Genius Ways to Hide the Fact That Youre Nervous 8 Genius Ways to Hide the Fact That Youre Nervous It is hard to escape those moments in life when you are feeling incredibly nervous. Even if we plan ahead and rehearse, our body’s reaction to being nervous can flare up in very uncomfortable physiological ways. We get that rush of adrenaline and our stomach feels like it’s turning upside down. We begin to sweat, our cheeks flush, and some of us even develop a nervous tic- bouncing knee, twitchy foot, nail biting, blinking too rapidly, or speaking too quickly. This fight-or-flight reaction is perfectly normal, although unsettling and, at times, quite embarrassing. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to calm yourself down enough making it possible for you to get through any situation no matter how nervous you become? Here are some great ways to hide your nervous behavior so you can tackle any nerve-racking event in your life. 1. Breathe Being nervous can disrupt normal breathing. Your breathing can become shallow and irregular. Is it any wonder we often feel faint when nervous? Take a few deep breaths and find your normal breathing pattern- that deep breath will help you relax too. 2. Don’t Admit It One of the worst things you can do is admit you are nervous. This brings the focus fully on you and all those horribly natural things that are happening to your body when nervous. 3. Speak Slowly When we are nervous, we often speak much too quickly. Be conscious of this and make a point of speaking slowly. Even if it sounds too slow to you, chances are those who are listening will think it’s just right. Much better to leave a meeting with your message delivered clearly instead of people scratching their heads saying, “What did he just say?” 4. Relax Your Body Do a quick body check and purposefully try to relax and calm your body’s nervous reactions- relax your panicked, tightened muscles. Sit up straight, but in a relaxed way, not too rigid. Make sure your feet and hands are calm and relaxed- no bouncing, tapping, or wringing allowed. Relax the muscles in your face so you’re not frowning or looking worried. 5. Maintain Eye Contact You are screaming, “I’m nervous” when you don’t maintain consistent eye contact nervously glancing around the room instead. Maintain eye contact without robotically staring- it’s okay to look away occasionally to gather your thoughts. 6. Ask a Question If you are feeling nervous and having a hard time getting your thoughts out, ask a question- the attention is all of a sudden on others, not you. This will give you time to take a deep breath, calm down, and collect your thoughts so you can articulate better what you are trying to say. 7. Be Yourself Remind yourself that you are fine just the way you are and take the focus off everything going perfectly. Go into situations knowing that you might make a mistake, and that’s OK- you’re human just like everyone else in the world. Don’t force a smile or tell a corny joke. Just let conversations happen naturally and smile or tell that joke when or if it’s appropriate. 8. Still Struggling? Tried everything and you are still struggling to hide your nervousness? According to Alison Wood Brooks at Harvard Business School, you should turn your nervousness into excitement. Instead of being nervous and saying you’re nervous, be excited and say you’re excited. She observed a fake it until you make it effect on a study group who tried to hide their nervousness by saying that they were excited instead and, sure enough, this group outperformed the group that admitted they were nervous. She believes that by channeling our nervous feelings into excitement, we tend to focus on positive outcomes instead of all the things that could potentially go wrong when we’re nervous- definitely worth a try!
